WHAT YOU STUDY

A fascinating subject which helps you to look more deeply at the world around you. Economic decisions and activities impact on many different areas of society and our everyday lives – interest rate fluctuations, taxation, and unemployment; even footballers wages can all be explained by economists! The subject helps you develop advanced decision making skills by effectively weighing up choices.

HOW YOU STUDY

Economics allows you to learn about the importance of choice and decision making in an economy. You will discover the role of the different economic actors within individual markets and the macro and global economy.

Students learn through a range of different methods including group tasks, independent study, presentations, essays and case analysis. The nature of the subject offer challenge and promotes interest for all students.

DEPARTMENT STRENGTHS AND RESOURCES

The Economics staff at Highfields are vastly experienced in the teaching of Economic at A-Level. This leads to strong results and achievements of the students. Students also have access to electronic journals, the departments own subject webpages and links with previous students whom have succeeded at University.

PROGRESSION TO UNIVERSITY/CAREERS

The study of Economics leads to a wide range of professions in finance, the Civil Service or in business. Economists are valued for their precise analytical thinking, the ability to evaluate arguments and decisions and their skills in assessing the reliability of information. Many students choose to follow their A-Level studies with degrees in Economics which is highly valued by the vast majority of organisations.

Economics students have achieved excellent results in both GCE A-Level over many years. It is common for many of the students studying Economics to progress onto do degrees in Economics or Business.
