Sport
Sport is an important feature of life for all year groups at Highfields.
At Highfields, Physical Education (PE) and sport plays a vital role in supporting the personal development of all students. We aim to inspire all students regardless of experience or background to develop a lifelong appreciation of physical activity and sport while nurturing the personal qualities that enable them to become healthy, confident, respectful, and resilient individuals.
Through a broad and inclusive curriculum, extracurricular opportunities, leadership experiences, and competitive sport, PE provides students with a strong foundation for leading active, healthy lifestyles, by developing the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values needed to thrive both in school and beyond. Students are also encouraged to take part in our extensive extra-curricular sports programme that has sessions running before and after school.
At Highfields we are proud of the many sporting activities we offer to students both in curriculum lessons and through our enrichment programme. These include football, netball, rugby, basketball, athletics, volleyball, trampolining, rounders and cricket to name a few. Our sports enrichment programme encourages students to attend clubs not only to develop their sporting abilities but also to enjoy being active, build friendships, and foster a lifelong appreciation of physical activity. Alongside participation opportunities, Highfields also has a strong tradition of sporting success, with students representing the school in a variety of teams, competing against other schools at local, regional and national levels. Through an extensive range of sporting experiences, students develop valuable life skills that extend far beyond sport, including:
Building Confidence and Resilience
PE provides students with opportunities to challenge themselves, step outside their comfort zones, and experience success in a variety of activities. Whether learning a new skill, competing in sport, or overcoming personal barriers, students develop confidence, determination, and resilience. They learn that improvement comes through effort, practice, and perseverance.
Promoting Physical and Mental Wellbeing
Regular participation in physical activity helps students understand the importance of leading healthy, active lifestyles. PE promotes positive physical health while also supporting mental wellbeing by reducing stress, improving mood, and encouraging healthy habits. Students learn how exercise contributes to lifelong health and happiness.
Developing Leadership and Responsibility
Students are encouraged to take on leadership roles in lessons and in extra-curricular activities through officiating, coaching opportunities, and supporting younger pupils. These experiences help develop communication, organisation, decision-making, and teamwork skills while fostering a sense of responsibility and service to others.
Encouraging Respect and Positive Relationships
PE provides a unique environment where students work together towards shared goals. Through team activities, competition, and collaboration, students learn the importance of respect, fairness, empathy, and sportsmanship. They develop positive relationships with their peers and learn how to communicate effectively with people from different backgrounds and abilities.
Fostering Character and Personal Values
Through participation in PE and sport, students develop key personal qualities which are reinforced through our head, heart and hands assessment model, with the hands strand focusing on developing the following values:
· Social Belonging: Teamwork, Respect, Self-Management
· Playing your Part: Responsibility, Compassion, Perseverance
· Becoming your best self: Aspiration, Etiquette, Resilience
· Committing to Physical Activity and becoming a Role-Model
These values support students not only in sport but also in their wider education and future lives.
Promoting Inclusion and Equality
We believe that every student should have the opportunity to enjoy and succeed in physical activity. Our PE curriculum and extra-curricular offer promotes inclusion by providing a range of activities that meet the needs, interests, and abilities of all learners. Students develop an appreciation of equality, mutual respect, and the importance of supporting others.
Preparing Students for Life Beyond School
The skills developed through PE extend far beyond the sports field. Communication, leadership, problem-solving, resilience, and teamwork are highly valued by employers and are essential for success in further education, employment, and everyday life. Through PE, students develop the confidence and character needed to become active, responsible, and successful members of society.
