Banking on the future: Year 10 Visits the Metro Bank

Highfields School's Year 10 cohort recently concluded an engaging and informative seven-week enterprise project in collaboration with Metro Bank. Aimed at enhancing students' grasp of practical mathematics used in daily banking, the initiative delved into the realms of interest rates, bank accounts, mortgages, loans, and other fundamental financial concepts.

Throughout the program, students immersed themselves in understanding the intricate workings of the banking world. From the fundamentals of interest rates to the nuances of managing bank accounts and navigating the complexities of mortgages and loans, the project offered a comprehensive exploration of the financial landscape.

The culmination of this insightful endeavor involved the students conceptualizing and developing a product designed specifically for Metro Bank's potential use. This hands-on experience allowed them to apply their newfound knowledge and creative thinking to devise innovative solutions tailored to the banking sector's needs.

Today marked a pivotal moment as the students had the unique opportunity to step into the bank's premises, immersing themselves in the operational dynamics of Metro Bank. Jingle Bells, Grammar Spells, Punctuation All The Way!

Highfields' Year 7 English groups embarked on an interactive and engaging learning journey through 'The Punctuation Show.' This online educational platform introduced students to the intricate world of punctuation rules in an innovative and captivating manner, guided by none other than Santa himself.

Through a series of immersive games and activities hosted on the platform, students delved deep into the art of punctuation. The sessions not only made learning punctuation rules enjoyable but also offered a fun-filled approach to mastering the nuances of grammar.

'The Punctuation Show' served as a valuable resource for enhancing SPAG (Spelling, Punctuation, and Grammar), nurturing reading comprehension, and laying a strong foundation for future GCSE test success. By making punctuation learning interactive and entertaining, the platform aimed to boost students' confidence and proficiency in English language skills.

State-of-the-Art Performing Arts Hub: A Centre of Creativity and Collaboration

Highfields School proudly unveils its latest development: a brand-new Performing Arts Hub. The newly revamped space, formerly known as the activity studio, is a versatile haven catering to music and drama curriculum lessons, as well as music tuition and extra-curricular activities, fostering an enriched artistic experience for students.

Comprising 11 purpose-designed rooms, the Performing Arts Hub stands as a testament to Highfields' commitment to arts education. Renamed and reimagined, the Lyceum now bears the names PA1 and PA2, serving as vibrant teaching spaces. PA3 to PA9, formerly the activity studio, offer a suite of rooms blending state-of-the-art technology with ample breakout spaces, catering to the diverse needs of students across Key Stages 3, 4, and 5.

This expansion comes in response to an impressive surge in student interest in music, surpassing national averages, especially in GCSE and A-level music programs. The consolidated space enables closer collaboration between music and drama departments, facilitating combined showcases and rehearsals, fostering a dynamic and interdisciplinary learning environment.

Music tuition at Highfields continues to soar, with over 280 students benefitting from instrumental lessons weekly. The enhanced teaching rooms now boast additional instruments and space, affirming the school's commitment to nurturing musical talent and growth.

In a bid to nurture student autonomy, a university-style room booking system has been introduced. This initiative allows students to reserve spaces for independent rehearsal, empowering them to explore and refine their musical talents beyond the structured curriculum.

Highfields aspires not only to elevate its own provision but also to become a local beacon of performing arts excellence. Future collaborations with neighboring schools and external providers aim to establish the school as a vibrant hub for artistic exploration and innovation.

Mince Pie and Mingle - SEND Coffee Morning

In a heartwarming gathering, Highfields School warmly welcomed parents and carers of Year 7 SEN students with Education, Health, and Care Plans (EHCP) for a delightful ‘Mince Pie and Mingle’ coffee morning. The event aimed to foster an informal and supportive space for parents, carers, and Teaching Assistants (TAs) to connect and engage in meaningful conversations about their children's progress and the support they receive.

Last weeks festive gathering buzzed with conversation, stories and shared experiences. Continuing the schools dedication to fostering home-school partnerships, building on the foundation set in July of this year.

"This Mince Pie and Mingle coffee morning serves as an extension of our commitment to fostering meaningful connections between our school and our parents and carers," remarked one of the event organizers. "It's heartening to witness this continued engagement, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in ensuring our Year 7 students with EHCPs thrive."

As conversations flowed and connections strengthened, the morning was a festive example of the school's ethos of community and collaboration. The event highlighted the significance of these interactions in shaping a supportive and nurturing environment for every student at Highfields.

Highfields Year 8 Students Conquer Lake Vyrnwy in Outdoor Education Adventure

Highfields School's Year 8 students embarked on an exhilarating outdoor education program as they embraced an action-packed activity day at Lake Vyrnwy. Over the course of two days, 150 enthusiastic students dived into the adventure-filled challenge, accompanied by Mr. Moody (Highfields answer to Bear Grylls), Miss Moody and the expert guidance of Bethania Adventure, an outdoor adventurous activity company.

The day kicked off with an immersive learning experience as students were tasked to work in teams, mastering various knot-tying techniques under the guidance of their instructors. Armed with newfound knot knowledge, the teams embarked on the main challenge—constructing a raft using four barrels and six logs.

Using teamwork and collaboration, the students put their skills to the test, assembling sturdy rafts that would navigate them through a challenging course on the scenic lake. Steering their creations, the teams honed their paddling techniques, mastering forward and backward strokes and executing precise 180-degree turns on their newly crafted rafts.

Adding a touch of friendly competition, the highlight of the day was a thrilling race between the teams. Amidst the excitement, students christened their rafts with names, many choosing the Titanic (although they were reminded that the Titanic sank).

Reflecting on the experience, one student enthused, "This is a very exciting and challenging day where we have learned so much in a safe and fun environment." Alongside the thrilling adventures; the day also taught the students about the lake's history and its pivotal role in regulating water levels, particularly its significance as a major water supply for Liverpool—a fact that often astounds the students given the lake's 140-year-old dam.

Highfields School's outdoor education program continues to provide students with engaging and educational experiences, fostering teamwork, problem-solving, and a deeper appreciation for the natural world. The Lake Vyrnwy activity day is a staple in the school’s curriculum, showing the commitment to holistic learning experiences, blending adventure and education in an unforgettable setting for its students.

Highfields School proudly introduces its latest initiative, the HSWV English Literature Podcast, now available on Spotify. Specifically designed to foster personal engagement with texts from the GCSE Literature specification, this podcast aims to encourage students to develop and express their 'personal response' to their literary studies.

The primary goal behind the podcast is to stimulate student engagement with the GCSE Literature curriculum, initiating discussions among students. By providing a platform for sharing ideas and viewpoints, this podcast aspires to promote thoughtful analysis and interpretation of literary works.

This innovative educational tool serves as an excellent means for students to enhance their oratory skills and public speaking abilities. Students supporting students: The Mental Health Champions

As a school we are passionate about understanding and supporting Mental Health. Highfields offer a wide range of interventions and support mechanisms to support Mental Health and we are proud to announce that we now also have a team of Mental Health Champions in school.

One of the primary goals of the Mental Health Champion Team is to break the stigma surrounding mental health issues. The team believe that educating students about various mental health conditions, their causes, and symptoms, means they are more likely to seek help and support when this is needed.

Twenty Year 12 and 10 students received Mental Health Champion training last week. The training was very thorough and enjoyable and has developed empathy and compassion amongst students. Through workshops, discussions and real-life scenarios, students learnt to put themselves in the shoes of others and to understand the challenges faced by individuals who may be struggling with Mental Health. Students were also taught essential coping skills and resilience strategies that can be promoted and shared with peers in school.

Mental Health Champion Training also encourages the formation of peer support networks within the school community. These networks act as a safe place and ensure that students do not feel alone and isolated if or when they are struggling to manage their mental health. Peer support can make a significant difference to students and often provides a level of understanding and comfort that is unique to individuals of the same age group.

The Mental Health Champion Team are very keen and eager to start working on projects that they created last week. For their first project, Mental Health Champions have created a Mental Health Advent Calendar that will be shared with students and staff throughout everyday in December.

Empowering student voices in the 'Every Child a Filmmaker' Initiative.

Highfields School was recently chosen to be a part of a promotion for Into Film’s exciting new initiative ‘Every Child a Filmmaker’. Chosen as a participant in this innovative program, Highfields opens doors to the world of filmmaking, providing a platform for students to express themselves through the lens of a camera.

As part of the promotion, Highfields Head of Film, Mr Beesla states “It’s really important for children to have the opportunity to make films. It is a way of expressing themselves and giving them a voice that they may not have otherwise”.

Some of our very own Film Studies and Film Club students were interviewed about the impact and significance filmmaking has had on their lives. “Film helps me share my own ideas and stories by letting me express myself in a medium that people can easily understand” quotes Olivia. Highfields School scoops prestigious national award

Highfields School has scooped the prestigious Alex Timpson ARC Attachment Award 2023 for helping vulnerable pupils to thrive.

The award celebrates best practice in attachment and trauma-aware schools and settings, and recognises those that have made a profound and lasting contribution to attachment and trauma-aware practices.

Attachment issues are sometimes experienced by children who have had difficulties early in life, and can make it hard for them to form healthy relationships and cope with the demands of school. Attachment-aware schools are sensitive to these difficulties and very skilled in helping vulnerable children to thrive.

The school was nominated for the award by the Wolverhampton Virtual School, which monitors and promotes the educational progress and achievement of children in care in the city.

Amy Bates, Assistant Headteacher at Highfields School, said: "We are delighted to receive the Alex Timpson ARC Attachment Award.

"Our inclusive school ethos is built upon positive relationships, and we always ensure that children are at the centre of everything we do. Staff at Highfields are dedicated to supporting all children and ensuring that they achieve the best possible outcomes – we never give up on them.

The winners were announced at the Attachment Research Community’s annual conference in Birmingham, which brought together professionals from across the country to discuss attachment and trauma awareness and celebrate best practice.
