BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate in Sport

The sport industry contributes billions of pounds each year to the UK economy and is a continuously growing sector. The industry employs more than 400,000 people and offers many career openings in a range of areas, including management, fitness, leisure, recreation, outdoors, well-being, elite performance, coaching and teaching.

The Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Sport, which is 360 Guided Learning Hours, is intended to be an Applied General qualification for post-16 students wanting to continue their education through applied learning, and who aim to progress to higher education and ultimately to employment, possibly in the sports sector. The qualification is equivalent in size to 1 A level and aims to provide the fundamentals of the study of the sport sector at this level. .


GCSE Entrance Requirements:

  • Cambridge National Sports Award - Level 2

  • English Language - Grade 4

  • Biology - Grade 4

Participation in extra-curricular activities and Sport outside of school is highly desirable.

WHAT YOU STUDY

The content of this qualification has been developed in consultation with academics to ensure that it supports progression to higher education. Employers and professional bodies have also been involved and consulted to confirm that the content is appropriate and consistent with current practice for learners who may choose to enter employment directly in the sport sector.

Students will study three mandatory units:

Unit 1: Anatomy and Physiology - Learners explore how the skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular and respiratory systems function and the fundamentals of the energy systems.

Unit 2: Fitness Training and Programming for Health, Sport and Well-being - Learners explore client screening and lifestyle assessment, fitness training methods and fitness programming to support improvements in a client’s health and well-being.

Unit 3: Professional Development in the Sports Industry - Learners explore the knowledge and skills required for different career pathways in the sports industry. Learners will take part in, and reflect on, a personal skills audit, career action plan and practical interview assessment activities.

Students will also study the optional unit:

Unit 7: Practical Sports Performance - Learners study the skills, techniques, tactics and rules of selected sports through active participation in individual/team sports.

HOW YOU STUDY

Unit 1: Anatomy and Physiology. Final written examination 1 hour 30 minutes - 33% 80 marks.

Unit 2: Fitness Training and Programming for Health, Sport and Well-being. Final written examination 2 hours 30 minutes - 33% 60 marks.

Unit 3: Professional Development in the Sports Industry. Non-Examined Assessment - 17%

Unit 7: Practical Sports Performance. Non-Examined Assessment - 17%

DEPARTMENT STRENGTHS AND RESOURCES

The department is extremely well resourced and the course is taught by experienced and well qualified staff. Students also have the opportunity to develop experience and knowledge through further sports opportunities outside of lessons. The practical spaces and fitness studio which are available to use are well equipped in order to support with practical elements of the course

PROGRESSION TO UNIVERSITY/CAREERS

The course aims to provide students with the skills and knowledge to pursue a successful career within sports and leisure occupations. The BTEC Level 3 extended certificate in Sport will count towards UCAS points and there are a lot of opportunities at undergraduate level for the further study of sport at University. The practical skills gained as part of the course will also support students who wish to pursue apprenticeships or employment opportunities.
