Computer Science
The Computer Science course is a combination of practical programming and Computing theory aimed at developing students computational thinking and improve their understanding and application of the core concepts in computer science. Students will analyse problems in computational terms and devise creative solutions by designing, writing, testing and evaluating algorithms.
The qualification was developed to prepare students for the technological world of tomorrow while providing a skillset that will thrive in any industry demonstrated by the breadth and vigor of the course.
Students will be assessed through two written papers: Computer systems and Computational thinking.
HOW STUDENTS WILL STUDY
Students’ lessons will be split into theory and programming to cover the breadth of the course. All theoretical knowledge is underpinned by tried and tested resources that allow students to develop their understanding of key Computing Concepts. The programming element of the course is taught via the programming language: Python, which is one of the fastest growing programming languages while offering easy to understand syntax as well as the ability to program in a range of paradigms.
DEPARTMENT STRENGTHS AND RESOURCES
We are extremely fortunate at Highfields to have a Computer Science department full of specialist teachers that can push students to reach their full potential. This is demonstrated by our consistently high results where students at Highfields on average achieve 1.8 of a grade higher than if they studied in the national average school.
HOW STUDENTS WILL BE ASSESSED
Computer systems: 1 hour and 30 minutes written paper – 50%.
Computational thinking: 1 hour 30 minutes written paper – 50%.
PROGRESSION ROUTES
A-Level Computer Science, leading to a wide range of degree courses and apprenticeships in the following areas: Computer Science, Networks, Software Engineering, Engineering, Cyber Security, Games Development, Computer animation, artificial intelligence, and machine learning.
Over the years we have had multiple students successfully get a degree apprenticeship with reputable companies such as Jaguar Land Rover and Capgemini.
