Food Preparation and Nutrition

The GCSE Food and Nutrition equips students with the knowledge, understanding and skills required to cook and apply the principles of food science, nutrition and healthy eating.  It encourages learners to cook, enables them to make informed decisions about food and nutrition and allows them to acquire knowledge in order to be able to feed themselves and others affordably and nutritiously, now and later in life.

HOW STUDENTS WILL STUDY

Over the course, students will study a range of units such as food commodities, principles of nutrition, diet and good health, the science of food, where food comes from and cooking and food preparation that will contribute to the learning and understanding of Food and Nutrition. Students will cook almost every week, allowing them to develop high level practical skills which will enable them to be successful when completing Non-Exam Assessments where they plan, prepare and cook a range of dishes to restaurant standards.

Theory work is taught through a range of teaching and learning activities which engage students and develop their knowledge and skills required to successfully answer questions in their written examination. Homework is set each week to consolidate and extend learning.
