Hospitality and Catering (Level 2)

The Hospitality & Catering qualification equips students with the knowledge, understanding and skills required to cook and learn how hospitality and catering providers operate.  It encourages learners to cook, enables them to make informed decisions about food and nutrition and allows them to acquire knowledge in order to be able to feed themselves and others affordably and nutritiously, now and later in life.

HOW STUDENTS WILL STUDY

Over the course, students will study two units. Unit 1 is the exam unit which informs students on the structure of the Hospitality industry and how it operates. Unit 2 is the internal assessment where students will plan, prepare and cook a nutritious meal based on a scenario. Students will cook every other week, allowing them to develop high level practical skills which will enable them to be successful when completing coursework.

Theory work is taught through a range of teaching and learning activities which engage students and develop their knowledge and skills required to successfully answer questions in their written examination. Homework is set each week to consolidate and extend learning.

DEPARTMENT STRENGTHS AND RESOURCES

Staff delivering the course are experienced examiners for the qualification. We have excellent facilities and a wide range of resources for practical and theory work.

HOW STUDENTS WILL BE ASSESSED

The assessment of the course is broken down into two areas, a Non-Exam Assessment element which is worth 60% and an external written/online exam worth 40%.

Both the Non-Exam Assessment and written exam are completed in Year 11. Throughout the course, students model the knowledge and skills required for their Non-Exam Assessment and receive high quality feedback to enable them to be successful.

PROGRESSION ROUTES

Students who choose Hospitality and Catering (Level 2) can progress onto a range of Level 3 courses.

We have had many students who have gone on to study Catering and Food related courses at College and University; they now have very successful careers in this industry.
