GCSE Music enables students to demonstrate their knowledge, skills and understanding in a way that suits them best. There is a broad content with areas of study that are the building blocks of music across musical genres. Music gives the opportunity for students to choose from a wide range of genres in their composing, catering for all interests and abilities.
HOW STUDENTS WILL STUDY
The GCSE Music course allows students to:
Actively engage in the process of music study in order to develop as effective and independent learners, and as critical and reflective thinkers with enquiring minds.
Develop their own musical interests and skills including the ability to make music individually and in groups.
Evaluate their own and others’ music.
Understand and appreciate a range of different kinds of music.
DEPARTMENT STRENGTHS AND RESOURCES
The teaching staff in the Music Department have dedicated expertise in Performance and Composition. We have a proven track record of results in Music and have prepared many students for successful applications to study for higher level Music qualifications.
Two dedicated rehearsal spaces with a range of music technology equipment, a recording studio, booth and practice rooms are available to help students reach their full potential.
Students will be expected to complete a performance audition to be successful in their acceptance on to the course.

Ensemble performance 36 marks
Solo performance 36 marks
Component 2 Composing 30%:
Free composition 36 marks
Set brief composition 36 marks
Component 3 Appraising 40%:
1 hour 15 minutes written exam
PROGRESSION ROUTES
GCSE Music also provides a solid foundation for progression to music-related courses at post 16, and a career in music professions.
