GCSE Music enables students to demonstrate their knowledge, skills and understanding in a way that suits them best. There is a broad content with areas of study that are the building blocks of music across musical genres. Music gives the opportunity for students to choose from a wide range of genres in their composing, catering for all interests and abilities.

HOW STUDENTS WILL STUDY

The GCSE Music course allows students to:

  • Actively engage in the process of music study in order to develop as effective and independent learners, and as critical and reflective thinkers with enquiring minds.

  • Develop their own musical interests and skills including the ability to make music individually and in groups.

  • Evaluate their own and others’ music.

  • Understand and appreciate a range of different kinds of music.

DEPARTMENT STRENGTHS AND RESOURCES

The teaching staff in the Music Department have dedicated expertise in Performance and Composition. We have a proven track record of results in Music and have prepared many students for successful applications to study for higher level Music qualifications.

Two dedicated rehearsal spaces with a range of music technology equipment, a recording studio, booth and practice rooms are available to help students reach their full potential.

Students will be expected to complete a performance audition to be successful in their acceptance on to the course.

HOW STUDENTS WILL BE ASSESSED

Component 1 Performing 30%: 

  • Ensemble performance 36 marks

  • Solo performance 36 marks 

Component 2 Composing 30%: 

  • Free composition 36 marks

  • Set brief composition 36 marks

 Component 3 Appraising 40%:

  • 1 hour 15 minutes written exam

PROGRESSION ROUTES

GCSE Music also provides a solid foundation for progression to music-related courses at post 16, and a career in music professions.
