Design

The Design department consists of Art and Design, Design and Technology and Construction.  Students are taught Design and Technology and Art and Design from Year 7, with Construction introduced as an option in Year 9.

Design is an inspiring discipline, which truly allows all students to develop their creative and problem solving skills.  Through the study of a deign subject, students not only develop subject specific skills, but they will also develop their ability to work independently, work as part of a team, manage their time, take risks, critically analyse and carry out research.

The Design industry in the UK continues to grow at a rapid pace. The 2024 Design Council report shows that Design contributes £97.5 billion to the UK economy annually and approximately 1.9 million people (1 in 20 workers) work in a Design related job.

Design is clearly a vital subject area and students at Highfields will develop their fundamental design skills, whilst working in a fun, creative and engaging way.  Our ultimate aim is for students to appreciate the huge impact design plays in our lives and give them the tools and skills to fully exploit the possibilities design can provide.
