As we move into the final term of Year 8, we need to give careful attention to the choices that students can make for their Year 9 studies. We regard Year 9 as an important foundation year in which staff will focus on really developing the core subject knowledge and skills that students will need to be successful when they begin their Key Stage 4 studies in Year 10.
To allow them to start focusing in greater depth on subjects they may wish to study at GCSE or an alternative Level 2 course in Year 10, students are able to choose six subjects to study in Year 9. They will then choose three of these for Year 10 and 11. Students and parents need to be aware that if students think they may wish to study a subject at GCSE or Level 2 in Year 10, they MUST choose it as an option in Year 9.
For students to realise their potential they should choose subjects very carefully after thorough discussions with staff and parents/carers. It is vital that students choose subjects not only that they enjoy but also that they are good at, are of sufficient academic challenge and lead them to the career paths of their choice.
