At Highfields, the Citizenship curriculum intends to create inquisitive, informed and active citizens who ask questions about the world that they live in and have a fundamental understanding of core British values.  The study of Citizenship is an excellent precursor to the study of many other Humanities subjects beyond GCSE; such as A Level Law and Criminology. 

Both the Key Stage 3 and 4 curriculum aim to support students in their developed understanding of democracy, power and influence, law and justice and what it means to be an active citizen of Britain in the 21st Century world.  Students will gain extensive knowledge of their rights and responsibilities; to both better understand the politics and policies which affect their own lives, but also the lives of others around the globe.  They will be encouraged to debate and ask questions about the laws, justices and injustices of the world we live in and participate in their own active campaigns to better understand their own influence and place in society.  All students study Citizenship at Key Stage 3 (Years 7 and 8) and follow the Edexcel 9-1 GCSE Citizenship specification at Key Stage 4 in Years 9 and 10.  Students will sit their Citizenship GCSE exams at the end of their two-year programme of study in Year 10.

Our RSE and Health Education Curriculum is delivered throughout years 7-11 and is non-examined but crucial to student personal development and welfare.  The curriculum is carefully designed to equip students with the knowledge and understanding of how to stay safe and healthy.  This includes taking care of physical and mental well-being, recognising healthy relationships with their friends, peers and families, statutory drugs and sex education and building resilience, confidence and ambition.  The RSE and Health Education curriculum  is vital for students understanding the emotional and physical changes they will experience during their time at Secondary school, and also to their knowledge of how and where they can seek advice or help at any stage.
