The Science Learning School
At Highfields, the Science Learning School subscribes to the Ten Principles of Science Education as laid out by the Association for Science Education (a).
Through our Science curriculum, we aim to develop students':
Curiosity about the world
Enjoyment of scientific activity
Understanding of how natural phenomena can be explained
Ability to make informed decisions, and to take appropriate actions, that affect their own wellbeing and the wellbeing of society and the environment
Understanding of a set of 'big ideas' in science, which include ideas of science and ideas about science and its role in society
Scientific capabilities and scientific attitudes
The Science curriculum is carefully designed and sequenced to ensure that there is clear progression towards the goals of science education. It maps out the core concepts that need to be achieved at various points, based on careful analysis of concepts and on current research and understanding of how learning takes place. The curriculum provides excellent teaching and learning experiences and educates students in the applications of science in real life and in careers involving science and scientific principles. It supports the application of knowledge and skills from a wide range of other subject areas.
At Key Stage 3, we aim to develop a love of science. The curriculum builds upon the knowledge and skills learned in primary school and enables students to develop the core scientific concepts and skills that will provide a solid foundation for GCSE study. It includes further engaging content that is not part of the GCSE curriculum in order to inspire students' interest in science. Students will be trained in the safe use of practical equipment and in analysing practical results scientifically.
At Key Stage 4, the curriculum is based upon the requirements of GCSE specifications. Students who wish to go on to study Science at Key Stage 5 will cover the higher-level concepts necessary as preparation for Applied Science qualifications and A Levels. All students will cover the knowledge and concepts necessary for them to function as scientifically literate citizens. The department will inform students about applications of science in a range of careers at both post-16 and graduate level.
At Key Stage 5, students on Cambridge Advanced National or A Level courses will study a curriculum designed to cover scientific concepts in much greater depth, in preparation for higher education and graduate-level science-based careers.
