At Highfields the Geography curriculum intends to enable our young people to develop a critical understanding of the world and how we interact with that world.  We endeavour to equip our young people with the ability to analyse the changing world and how they interact with their environments.  We want to broaden their world by providing access to cultures and cultural understandings from around the world.

Through the study of Geography students are encouraged to consider how the world and its many interconnections shape our environments, this will be done through 4 key principles, Geographical skills to support interpretation and analysis of information, Human and Physical interactions to allow interpretation and evaluation, Scale at a local, national and global context, and interpretation and analysis of Space and Place.

The study of Geography from Year 7-9 follows a sequenced order.  This has been designed to enable students to build upon skills they have been developing and to help improve retention of knowledge and understanding at KS3.  Schemes of work will focus on at least one of the 4 key principles identified.  Opportunities for students to discuss and reflect upon their learning within their own and/or their classroom context will be encouraged through the planning and resourcing of each unit.  Each Scheme of Work will follow a key question to act as a focal point for learning.  This key question may be addressed partially or fully through the identified assessment but will consistently provide the basis for reflection and applied understanding of the key principles of the unit.

At Key Stages 4 and 5 units of work have been carefully selected so that ethos of our intent remains both visible and viable.  Our GCSE and A Level courses aim to nurture and develop prior learning of content, concepts or skills wherever possible.  At Key Stage 4 and 5 students study the AQA Geography specification.
