Performing Arts
Performing Arts is an exciting subject at KS3,4 and 5 where student can learn through: working with others, problem solving, commitment, focus, self-discipline, creativity, confidence and self-expression.
At Key Stage 3 we use a variety of play text-based extracts and other forms of prose to stimulate students in their practical creativity and empathy. These allow students to explore performance skills and techniques in groups or pairs, leading to a performance of the extract. They gain both independence and co-operation skills in working with others, problem solving through the process of devising and rehearsing. Students are taught a range of performance techniques and styles to explore in practical work, as well as experience being an audience for others. They are taught analytical skills to enable them to analyse and evaluate their own performance and that of others.
The Level 2 BTEC Tech Award in Performing Arts (Drama Route) is a nationally recognised GCSE-equivalent qualification. An exciting, practical course for students who love performance, creativity, collaboration and storytelling.
Being a vocational course, it focuses on practical performance skills, creative drama and industry standards, building overall confidence and knowledge of the performing arts sector. Unlike traditional written exams, this course focuses on learning by doing. Students develop their skills as performers, creators and reflective artists through workshops, rehearsals, performances and real-world projects.
The course is split into three components which students will complete over the two academic years:
Component 1: Exploring the Performing Arts
Learners will develop their understanding of the performing arts by examining the work of performing arts professionals and the processes used to create performance.
Component 2: Developing Skills and Techniques in the Performing Arts
Learners will develop their performing arts skills and techniques through the reproduction of acting, dance and/or musical theatre repertoire as performers or designers
Component 3: Responding to a Brief
Learners will be given the opportunity to work as part of a group to contribute to a workshop performance as either a performer or a designer in response to a brief and stimulus.
Students will keep a written portfolio throughout the course. This will include rehearsal logs, workshop reflections, notes on how professional performances have influenced their own work, and a record of their technical skill development.
For most assessments, students may present their learning in different ways (e.g. a presentation using video clips of their work, a live demonstration, a written report, a podcast, or mood boards). Please note that Component 3 must be submitted as a written portfolio.
Our Performing Arts department provides an exciting, supportive environment where students can grow in confidence and creativity. Students are taught by experienced staff who have worked, and continue to work, professionally in the industry, bringing real-world insight into every lesson. We have excellent facilities including a theatre, dedicated performance spaces, and six private practice rooms that students can book for rehearsals and skill development. We also offer a wide range of extra-curricular opportunities, such as the school musical, musical theatre club, band rehearsals and choir that further enrich students’ training, To deepen students’ understanding of the industry, we also offer the chance to attend a trip to see live professional theatre, giving students first-hand experience of what high-quality performance looks and feels like.
