A-level Chemistry will give you an exciting insight into the contemporary world of chemistry. It covers the key concepts of chemistry and practical skills are integrated throughout the course. This combination of academic challenge and practical focus makes the prospect of studying A-level chemistry highly appealing.

GCSE Entrance Requirements:

  • Mathematics - Grade 6

  • English Language - Grade 5 

  • Chemistry - Grade 6 and Biology/Physics - Grade 6, OR Combined Science – Grade 7-7

WHAT YOU STUDY

You will gain specific knowledge in the traditional fields of Chemistry, including organic, inorganic, physical and analytical Chemistry.

In the first year you will study modules 1-4 for AS level Chemistry. These are Development of Practical Skills, Foundation Chemistry, Periodic Table and Energy and Core Organic Chemistry.

There are two written papers (50% each).

In the second year you will study modules 5-6 for A-level Chemistry. These are Physical Chemistry and Transition Elements and Organic Chemistry and Analysis.

There are three written exams (37%, 37% and 26%) and a practical endorsement (pass or fail).

HOW YOU STUDY

Students will attain the ability to recognise, recall and show understanding of specific chemical facts, terminology and principles. The A-level Chemistry course will show students how to use information with the view of interpreting data and effects of chemical principles, as well as presenting arguments and ideas in a logical, clear manner.

Assessment is rigorous and involves end of topic tests and school examinations with constant reference to structured questions and extended response questions, covering theory and practical skills.

Staff have continuously developed in-house learning resources to reinforce learning and to help prepare students for rigorous, regular assessments.

PROGRESSION TO UNIVERSITY/CAREERS

Chemistry is a multi-disciplinary science that allows you to develop subject-specific and transferable skills, which are valued by all employers, meaning your future career doesn't have to be in a laboratory.

Chemistry overlaps with other subjects; you will develop skills that are very useful in Healthcare sciences such as Medicine, Veterinary Science, Dentistry, Optometry and Pharmacy as well as Biological Sciences, Physics, Forensics, Engineering, Geology and Earth Science.

Apprenticeships are also available in research and development based at major companies e.g. GSK, Rolls Royce and Russell Group Universities.

OUR SUCCESSES

We have achieved a 100% pass rate in Advanced Level Chemistry in the last four years and 89% A-C in the last three years. Students who have studied Chemistry at Highfields have gone on to study Medicine, Dentistry, Natural Science, Biomedical Sciences, Pharmacy, Biochemistry, Medical Physics and Chemical Engineering.
