WHAT YOU STUDY

The A-Level in Computer Science qualification is divided into three components:

Computer systems (40%)

Algorithms and programming (40%) Programming project (20%)

The emphasis will be on problem solving using computers through computer programming and algorithms. There will also be a focus on the mathematical skills used to express computational laws and processes, e.g. Boolean algebra/logic and comparison of the complexity of algorithms with less emphasis on ICT skills. The programming project will have a principle focus on coding.

HOW YOU STUDY

The Computer Systems and Algorithms & Programming components are both assessed through written, two and a half hour examinations. The programming component is assessed   through student portfolios that are externally moderated.

DEPARTMENT STRENGTHS AND RESOURCES

The teaching staff in the Digital Media Department have expertise in Computer Science. We have a proven track record of results in both academic and vocational subjects and have prepared many students for successful applications to study for higher level IT qualifications beyond our Sixth Form.

PROGRESSION TO UNIVERSITY/CAREERS

The course will provide students with a range of transferable skills that will facilitate personal growth and foster cross-curricular links in areas such as Mathematics, Science and Design and Technology. Computer Science is a very creative subject and skills such as problem solving and analytical thinking will all be refined and explored as students progress through the Learning and Assessment Programme.

OUR SUCCESSES

Last year 62% of students achieved A* - A, 88% A* - B and 100% A* - C
