WHAT YOU STUDY
There are four units – two internally assessed (controlled conditions) and two examination based.
Unit 1: Changing Awareness of Crime
This unit reviews impressions of criminality and how reporting affects the public perception of criminality. Students will need to understand how campaigns are used to elicit change in law and plan their campaigns for a change in a specific law.
Unit 2: Criminological Theories
Looking at criminal behaviour and deviance, and how they are constructed or rooted in biological factors. Students will analyse situations of criminality and explain how these may cause criminality. They will ultimately assess how criminological theories inform Government policy development.
Unit 3: Crime Scene to Courtroom
Understanding the process of criminal investigations, prosecutions of suspects, and to review criminal cases.
Unit 4: Crime and Punishment
This unit looks at the systems which make and apply the law in the UK including models of criminal justice, social control, and punishment. Students will be able to explain the role of various agencies in achieving social order.
HOW YOU STUDY
Criminology is a subject that values both knowledge and effective study skills. Throughout the course, students develop strong organisational habits and independent learning strategies to support success in both the Controlled Assessments (CAs) and the exam units. For the CAs, students are guided to maintain well-organised folders, complete regular progress checks, and carry out further research to enhance the quality of their work. For the examined units, students use a variety of structured revision methods such as exam booklets, structure strips, past papers, flashcards, and mind maps. Lessons are designed to actively develop these skills, ensuring students are fully prepared for every stage of assessment.
PROGRESSION TO UNIVERSITY/CAREERS
Criminology provides an excellent foundation for a wide range of university courses and career pathways. The analytical, evaluative, and research skills developed throughout the course are highly valued by universities and employers alike. Many students progress to degree programmes in Criminology, Law, Psychology, Sociology, or Policing, while others apply their knowledge to areas such as forensic investigation, social work, youth justice, and the civil service.
OUR SUCCESSES
Our Criminology department continues to achieve excellent results, with the vast majority of students securing grades A–C each year. In 2025, over 60% of students achieved a grade B or above, maintaining our strong record of high performance. For the past two years 100% of students have achieved A-D with many progressing to university courses in Criminology, Law, Psychology, and related fields.
