WHAT YOU STUDY

The English Legal System: The principles underlying the English Legal System. Courts, criminal process, and the prison system.

Criminal Law: The principles of criminal law and developing critical awareness of criminal law in relation to specific crimes and defences.

Law Making: The principles of English Law. The doctrine of precedent, legislation, European Union law and law reform.

Nature of Law: How we apply the law in a daily setting, why decisions are made and how the results of changes in specific cases effect everyone.

Human Rights Law: Studying how well our human rights such as freedom of expression are protected, and the role the European Court of Human Rights has compared to the UK courts.

All units are assessed through external written examinations. Candidates demonstrate their knowledge of the chosen area of law and the development of that area using legal methods and reasoning to analyse legal materials whilst selecting legal rules in order to draw conclusions.

HOW YOU STUDY

There is a balance between learning the structure of the legal system and the skills needed to formulate a coherent argument, defend a position or challenge an established principle. There are a large number of case studies which form the basis of our legal system that need to be learned and systems for extended responses to questions. The external examination enables our students to focus upon the core skills for success.

We have written the majority of the resources ourselves, so that they are tailored specifically for the courses we provide.

PROGRESSION TO UNIVERSITY/CAREERS

This is a really useful A-Level if you are planning a degree in Law, or in Business, or in a range of different professions which interact with our legal system.

OUR SUCCESSES

Over the last two years the Law department have had some excellent examination results. We are successful at kick-starting a number of students’ legal careers and have built a successful working relationship with our students.
