WHAT YOU STUDY

You will study a wide range of literature which includes a unit entitled ‘Love Through The Ages’ in which you will explore a Shakespeare play, a poetry anthology and a prose text, one of which will be pre-1900. The second component is ‘Texts in Shared Contexts’ which is currently ‘World War One and its Aftermath’ – you study all three genres in this unit. Finally, the third component is called ‘Texts Across Time’ in which you study two independently chosen texts of any genre; one of these must be pre-1900.

HOW YOU STUDY

The course encourages independent study and wider reading will be a significant part of your studies. You will be expected to read from a diverse wider reading list in your own time and to make thorough and detailed notes on all of the texts you read. You will learn how to approach unseen extracts and poems as well as studying set texts for the exam. You are assessed predominantly by exam – you will sit two exams - each worth 40% of your A-Level. In addition you will complete a non- exam assessment (NEA) which is an ‘Independent Critical Study’ where you must write a comparative essay about two texts. This is teacher assessed and is worth 20% of your A-Level. The exams come at the end of the second year.
