Art, Craft & Design

The GCSE Art, Craft & Design course develops students’ skills in a variety of 2D and 3D media.  Students gain a wealth of experience in Art & Design which they can take into a range of careers.

In Year 10

The focus of the course is to develop students’ Art skills; they experience a broad range of techniques and outcomes including Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, Textile & Mixed Media techniques, Ceramics and Sculpture.  Students will produce a portfolio of work with one assessed Coursework Project which encompasses 2 or more specialisms  which will gain them 60% of their marks towards their final GCSE grade.

In Year 11

Students will complete their coursework and produce an Art Exam project between January and March.  The project is developed and assessed in the same way as the coursework project.  The final piece is produced during the 10 hour exam session. The Art Exam project will make up the final 40% of their GCSE grade.

HOW STUDENTS WILL STUDY

Students will be introduced to a number of skills and techniques which they will apply to their work in a thematic approach. Projects cover all assessment objectives AO1 Develop, AO2 Experiment, AO3 Record and AO4 Present.

DEPARTMENT STRENGTHS AND RESOURCES

The staff in the department have a number of years’ experience teaching all aspects of art, craft and design disciplines. The Art  department is fully equipped with a wide range of materials and resources such as photography equipment, Textile resources and a Kiln for ceramics, which allows our students to develop a broad range of design skills using a variety of techniques and media.

HOW STUDENTS WILL BE ASSESSED

  • Non-Exam Assessment 60%

  • Exam 40%

  • Components of the coursework will be assessed on completion.

PROGRESSION ROUTES

The qualification enables students to progress on to Art foundation and degree courses.

Career opportunities include: Design consultant, illustrator, cartoonist, animator, graphic designer, theatre design, costume, make-up artist, teacher, lecturer, photographer, textile/fashion designer, architect, CAD, fashion journalism, sculptor and ceramicist.
