Biology
Biology is an exciting and rewarding GCSE that connects to so many aspects of everyday life from the molecules inside our cells to the impact humans have on ecosystems around the world. The course is divided into six modules, covering a broad range of fascinating topics, alongside the development of key practical skills.
B1: Cell level systems
B2: Scaling up
B3: Organism level systems
B4: Community level systems
B5: Genes, inheritance and selection
B6: Global challenges
B7: Practical skills
How Students Will Study
Students engage with Biology through a wide variety of approaches, including data analysis, group tasks, student-led presentations, problem solving, and independent research. Throughout the course, we aim to build genuine enthusiasm for the subject, develop a confident and critical approach to scientific evidence, and equip students with the knowledge and skills needed for future progression.
Practical work is woven throughout lessons, giving students the opportunity to develop real investigative skills in a hands-on environment. Students are also encouraged to take ownership of their learning through structured independent study outside of lessons, helping to consolidate understanding and address any misconceptions along the way.
Department Strengths and Resources
We have a thorough and supportive assessment system in place, designed to help every student make strong progress and identify areas for development early. Topic and end-of-module assessments are used regularly, with after-school support available at key points throughout the course.
As students approach their examinations, they benefit from a bespoke and highly comprehensive revision programme. Our teachers bring first-hand experience as former examiners for the exam board, meaning revision is carefully tailored to give students the very best preparation and the greatest opportunity to achieve their potential.
How Students Will Be Assessed
Progress is monitored throughout the course via topic tests, end-of-unit assessments, and school examinations. All students begin on the Combined Science pathway, with those demonstrating strong prior attainment being invited to transfer to the Separate Biology pathway following their Year 10 school examinations.
The final examinations at the end of Year 11 contribute 100% to the overall grade. Students will also complete a series of Practical Activity Groups (PAGs) during the course, there is no coursework, but practical skills are assessed through examination questions.
Progression Routes
GCSE Biology provides a strong foundation for a wide range of exciting futures. Students who achieve the required grades can progress to A Level Biology, opening doors to Further and Higher Education across a broad range of disciplines.
Biology also supports pathways into Applied Science, vocational qualifications, and apprenticeships with major employers. Our A Level Biology students have gone on to study Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Biochemistry, Biomedical Science, Marine Biology, Biotechnology, Environmental Studies, and Teaching in Higher Education.

Student Quote:
‘Biology is challenging, but really enjoyable. It has made me able to understand how my body works and how we can affect the environment. My favourite lesson was a dissection allowing me to visualise the full structure of the heart.’
