Cambridge National in Sports Studies (OCR)

The Cambridge National in Sports Studies course is an excellent vocational course. It provides students with a variety of both theoretical and practical experiences. The qualification takes a more sector-based focus, whilst also encompassing some core sport/physical education themes. Learners have the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge about different types of sport and physical activity, develop sports skills for their own practical performance and develop sports leadership skills. Theoretically they will learn about the contemporary issues in sport such as funding, participation, major sporting events, the role of national governing bodies and the use of technology in sport. Finally, learners will learn about the relationship between sport and the media and how they can support each other. The course consists of three units:

R184: Contemporary issues in sport

In this unit students will learn about a range of topical and contemporary issues in sport, relating to; participation levels and barriers, promotion of values and ethical behaviour, the role of high-profile sporting events, the role of national governing bodies and how technology is used within sport.

R185: Performance and Leadership in sports activities

In this unit students will learn how to develop their skills as both a performer, in two different sporting activities, and as a leader in one activity. As a leader students will have the opportunity to plan, lead and review a safe and effective sporting activity session. Students will also have the opportunity to develop a range of transferable skills. Students will learn how to work both independently and as part of a team in sport. They will also develop their communication skills with members of their team as well as developing confident communication when leading others. Furthermore, students will develop their ability to perform under pressure, both as a participant and as a leader, and will use initiative to solve problems and make decisions.

R186: Sport and the media

Sport uses the media to promote itself and in turn the media uses sport to sell its products. Opinions are moulded, role models created or rejected, and sports performers can be made into celebrities. However, the increased exposure of sports and performers may not always be a positive experience. In this unit students will learn to explore both sides of media sources and will apply real life examples to demonstrate the nature of the relationship between media and sport. Students will develop their ability to evaluate and interpret the different ways sport is represented by the media and the impact this can have.

HOW STUDENTS WILL STUDY

Students will learn in both a classroom and practical environment. They will use a range of different learning styles to ensure they are fully engaged in the theoretical aspects of the course. They will also apply their skills and knowledge in practical sports through performing and leading.

DEPARTMENT STRENGTHS AND RESOURCES

The department is extremely well resourced, and the course is taught by experienced and well qualified staff. The practical spaces available will also ensure that students have the opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge to the practical elements of the course.
