Applied Science (Level 3)
Applied science is a course that prepares students for working in industry. You will have the opportunity to study the art of being a scientist in a vocational context and be given the skills to work in a science laboratory.

WHAT YOU STUDY
The course is broken up into four units covering the key applications of science, including practical techniques and scientific investigative skills. There is also a range of optional units available to study in Year 13.
HOW YOU STUDY
You will be taught a series of lessons that enable you to develop the scientific understanding and skills to perform in the relevant assessments.
Due to changes from Ofqual, 58% of the assessment for Applied Science will be externally assessed. There will be one standard examination and one practical activity assessed by the examination board (Pearson).
OUR SUCCESSES
Students studying Applied Science at Highfields have gone on to university to study courses such as Veterinary Nursing and Marine Biology. Doing well in Applied Science will open doors to so many different areas of Science.
DEPARTMENT STRENGTHS AND RESOURCES
Highfields School has been delivering Applied Science for several years. We have a team of very experienced teachers with a wide variety of experience working in the Science industry. In addition, we have key links with the University of Wolverhampton and continue to develop links with industry around Wolverhampton.
PROGRESSION TO UNIVERSITY/CAREERS
Applied Science will count towards UCAS points, there are a lot of opportunities for further study at University. The practical skills gained as part of the course will also support students who wish to pursue apprenticeships or employment opportunities.
