Film Studies
Film Studies is a fascinating and enriching a-level which combines both academic and creative study. Students have the opportunity to write analytically and evaluate the ways directors create meaning in films. They also have the opportunity to apply their knowledge of filmmaking to their own creative projects.

WHAT YOU STUDY
You will study a diverse range of film, including documentary, film from the silent era, experimental film, short films and also British and global cinema. Through these you will analyse the key concepts (including social, cultural, political, historical and technological contexts) and other contexts to explore how films generate meaning, using a variety of filmmaking perspectives. Alongside these you will study the techniques and skills required to be able to produce your own screenplay and short film, combining careful analytical analysis and practical film development.
HOW YOU STUDY
This course allows you to develop two different forms of study – analytical and creative. You will learn about how directors create meaning in films and be able to analyse and evaluate how effectively filmmakers use different methods in films. After you’ve learned about these features, you will apply your knowledge of filmmaking to your own creative coursework. You are assessed through coursework and an exam.

The Film Studies staff are experienced and innovative and have a proven track record of success. You will experience a variety of different learning styles which will enrich your learning experience. Between the staff there is a diverse range of knowledge of the subject. We have excellent resources to deliver this course, including our new fixed Film Studio which has a range of innovative filming equipment alongside a number of filmmaking programmes on the Mac computers.
PROGRESSION TO UNIVERSITY/CAREERS
It is possible to go to university to study Film and it is a subject that can lead to a wide range of careers in media. In fact, there is high percentage of students who study Film and Media that go on into employment after university. Film Studies allows you to develop skills that will benefit you, whatever you go on to do.
OUR SUCCESSES
Since we began the course in 2012, we have maintained a 100% pass rate. Several students from last year’s group have gone on to study Film degrees at university and we have seen several students awarded DIGIs at the Wolverhampton regional media awards.
