Level 2 BTEC Tech Award in Performing Arts

The Level 2 BTEC Tech Award in Performing Arts is for learners who want to acquire sector-specific applied knowledge and skills through vocational contexts by studying professionals’ work and processes used, the skills and techniques used in different roles, and how to contribute to the creation of a performance in either a performance or non-performance role as part of their Key Stage 4 learning.

HOW STUDENTS WILL STUDY

The Tech Award gives learners the opportunity to develop sector-specific applied knowledge and skills through realistic vocational contexts. Learners will have the opportunity to develop knowledge and technical skills in the following areas:

  • Development of key skills that prove their aptitude in performing arts, such as reproducing repertoire and responding to stimuli

  • Processes that underpin effective ways of working in the performing arts, such as development of ideas, rehearsal and performance

  • Attitudes that are considered most important in the performing arts, including personal management and communication

  • Knowledge that underpins effective use of skills, processes and attitudes in the sector, such as roles, responsibilities, performance disciplines and styles

  • Broadening experience and skills participation in different types of performance activities, with the opportunity to practically apply knowledge and skills through project work, such as developing ideas and performing for specific audiences

DEPARTMENT STRENGTHS AND RESOURCES

Our teaching staff are highly experienced practitioners in multiple disciplines and have the relevant subject knowledge and skills to deliver the knowledge, understanding and skills requirements for each component.  Teaching resources and assessment activities are planned to give students every opportunity to meet the requirements of the unit and achieve the highest grade possible. We have state-of-the-art facilities to support innovative teaching and inspire students to perform to the best of their abilities.

HOW STUDENTS WILL BE ASSESSED

Component 1/2 -

Components 1 and 2 are assessed through non-exam internal assessment. The non- exam internal assessment for these components has been designed to demonstrate application of the conceptual knowledge underpinning the sector through realistic tasks and activities. This style of assessment promotes deep learning through ensuring the connection between knowledge and practice. The components focus on:

  • The development of core knowledge and understanding of a range of performance/production styles, and the key features that contribute to these such as practitioners’ roles, responsibilities, skills and techniques

  • The development and application of skills such as practical and interpretative, rehearsal and performance/production in acting, dance, musical theatre and/or production through workshops and classes

  • Reflective practice through the development of skills and techniques that allow learners to respond to feedback and identify areas for improvement using relevant presentation techniques, for example a logbook.

Component 3 -

There is one external assessment for the qualification, Component 3. Component 3 builds directly on Components 1 and 2 and enables learning to be brought together and related to a real-life scenario.

Component 3: Responding to a Brief requires learners to apply performances or production skills and techniques in response to a brief and stimulus, developing group workshop performance for a selected audience. The design of this external assessment ensures that there is sufficient stretch and challenge, enabling the assessment of knowledge and understanding at the end of the learning period.

PROGRESSION ROUTES

This qualification can lead to:

  • A Levels in a relevant discipline in preparation for entry to higher education in a range of subjects

  • Study as part of a vocational qualification at Level 3, such as a BTEC National in Performing Arts, which prepares learners to enter employment or apprenticeships, or move on to higher education by studying a degree in the performing arts or production arts areas
